Hello and welcome to a unique guide aims solely at the world of jeans. Once just the mainstay of youth culture, today almost everyone likes to wear a pair of jeans and justly the selection of styles and brands has exploded to meet the requirements of consumers. Without s doubt the styles and materials used has come a longway from the working garments they were originally invented for.

Jeans were traditionally trousers (pants as the Americans like to call them) made from denim, present today the term jeans usually applies to a style of trousers, because a variety of fabrics including cotton, suede, leather and corduroy have been used. Jeans were also originally intended as a hard wearing cloth for outdoor work, such as cattle hands and construction workers. It was only in the 1950's when rock 'n' roll and youth culture started that jeans became casual clothing among teenagers and young adults.

Some people seem to believe that jeans were created by Levi Strauss. This is erroneous, a thick cotton cloth known as dungaree was first used by sailors in Bombay, India. After this jeans in the form of trousers were used in the navy of Genoa, Italy, when they were an independent republic. The first denim fabric actually came from Nîmes, France. Levi Strauss was however the man responsible for creating the first riveted jeans in the 1850's, this helped reinforce the points of strain, so that jeans would not need to be repaired so often. The stone-washing technique was later invented and introduced by the GWG (Great Western Garment) corporation in the 1950's.
